What do RTO and RPO mean?
RTO (Recovery Time Objective) is the maximum time your business can afford to be down before systems are restored. RPO (Recovery Point Objective) is the maximum data loss you can accept, measured as the time since the last usable backup. Every serious backup and disaster recovery concept is designed around these two numbers, not around a software product.

RTO: how long can you be offline
The difference between one hour and three days of downtime is rarely the backup itself, it is the restore path: is there documented, tested procedure, standby hardware, or a virtualized copy that can boot immediately? Your real RTO is whatever your last restore test proved, not what a datasheet claims.
RPO: how much work can you lose
With a single nightly backup, a crash at 5 pm erases the entire working day: orders, bookings, documents. If that is unacceptable, the RPO must shrink, which means more frequent backups or continuous replication for the systems where the loss actually hurts.
Set them consciously, then test against them
Costs rise steeply as RTO and RPO approach zero, so the right values are a business decision: which systems must be back in an hour, which can wait a day? Write the numbers down per system, and let every restore test measure against them. Unwritten objectives are always met, and that is exactly the problem.

A common pattern: core systems (ERP, file server, mail) with an RTO of 2 to 4 hours and an RPO of 1 hour or less, secondary systems with a day for both. The honest answer comes out of asking what an hour of standstill costs in your specific business.
